Teravih Prayer (Tarawih)

Teravih is a voluntary Sunnah prayer performed each night during Ramadan, after the Isha prayer. It consists of 20 rak'ahs and is one of the most virtuous acts of worship in this blessed month.

Niyyah (Intention)

نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ لِلّٰهِ تَعَالٰى صَلَاةَ التَّرَاوِيحِ (اِقْتَدَيْتُ بِالإِمَامِ) أَدَاءً، اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ۞

Neveytu en u salliye lillahi teala salatett-teravihî (iktedeytü bil-imam) edaen, Allahu ekber.

Prayer Structure

Teravih consists of 20 rak'ahs, prayed in 10 pairs of 2. Each pair is performed like a standard 2-rak'ah prayer (Subhanaka → Fatiha + surah → ruku → sujud). After every 4 rak'ahs (2 pairs), take a short break and recite the Teravih dua below, then continue with the next set.

After completing all 20 rak'ahs, it is Sunnah to pray Witr prayer (3 rak'ahs).

Teravih Dua

Recited during the break after every 4 rak'ahs (5 times in total throughout the prayer).

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْمُلْكِ وَالْمَلَكُوتِ، سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْعِزَّةِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ وَالْهَيْبَةِ وَالْقُدْرَةِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْجَبَرُوتِ، سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْحَيِّ الَّذِي لَا يَنَامُ وَلَا يَمُوتُ، سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ۞

Subhane dhil-mulki vel-melekut, subhane dhil-izzeti vel-azameti vel-heybeti vel-kudreti vel-kibriyai vel-ceberut, subhanel-melikil-hayyillezhi la yenamu ve la yemut, subbuhun kuddusun rabbuna ve rabbul-melaiketi ver-ruh.

Note: (اِقْتَدَيْتُ بِالإِمَامِ) is used only for the fard prayer when praying in congregation (with an imam).
