How to Lead Congregational Prayer
Leading the congregational prayer (jemaat) is an act of great responsibility and honour in Islam. The person leading stands in front and guides every movement of the prayer aloud. This guide explains everything step by step — who can lead, the niyyah of the person leading, how to straighten the rows, what to recite aloud and what silently, and how the congregation must follow.
Who Can Lead the Prayer
The person leading must be a Muslim, mentally sound, and in a state of ritual purity (valid wudu).
They should have the best knowledge of the Quran and Islamic rulings among those present. A hafiz (one who has memorised the Quran) is preferred.
A man leads men. A woman may lead other women in prayer but cannot lead men.
The person leading must not have any condition that would invalidate the prayer of those behind them.
If uncertain who should lead, the one with the best Quran recitation takes precedence.
Niyyah of the Person Leading (Intention)
The person leading makes their intention silently in the heart, stating which prayer they are leading and that they are leading the congregation. The example below is for Dhuhr (4 rak'ahs obligatory). Adjust the prayer name and rak'ah count for each prayer.
Congregation's Niyyah (Muqtadi)
Each person in the congregation makes their own intention silently, adding that they are following the person leading. Same Dhuhr example:
(اِقْتَدَيْتُ بِالإِمَامِ)
Before the Prayer Begins
- 1
The person leading stands at the front, centred in the first row, facing the qibla (direction of the Ka'bah in Mecca).
- 2
The congregation arranges itself in straight rows (sufuf) directly behind the person leading — men in front, then boys, then women at the back.
- 3
The person leading calls for rows to be straightened: "Istawu!" (Straighten up!). Rows must be tight with no gaps — shoulders and feet aligned.
- 4
If the iqama has not yet been called, it is called now, before the prayer begins.
Leading the Prayer — Step by Step
- 1
Raise both hands to the earlobes and say the opening takbir aloud: "Allahu Ekber" — this officially begins the prayer for both the person leading and the congregation.
- 2
Recite Sena (Subhanekellahümme...) silently. The congregation also recites it silently after joining.
- 3
Recite Euzubillah and Bismillah silently, then Al-Fatiha. In Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha — Al-Fatiha is recited aloud. In Dhuhr and Asr — silently.
- 4
After Al-Fatiha, recite an additional surah or verses. Aloud in the first two rak'ahs of Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha; silently in Dhuhr and Asr. The congregation listens in silence.
- 5
Say "Allahu Ekber" aloud and bow into Ruku. In ruku, recite "Subhane Rabbiyel Azim" silently (minimum 3 times). The congregation follows after hearing your takbir.
- 6
Rise from ruku saying aloud: "Semi Allahu limen hamideh" (Allah hears whoever praises Him). Stand upright briefly. The congregation responds silently: "Rabbena leke'l hamd".
سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُSemi Allahu limen hamideh
Allah hears whoever praises Him — said aloud by the person leading when rising from ruku
- 7
Say "Allahu Ekber" aloud and go into the first Sujud. Recite "Subhane Rabbiyel A'la" silently (minimum 3 times). Rise with "Allahu Ekber", sit briefly, then perform the second Sujud.
- 8
Rise for the second rak'ah with "Allahu Ekber" and repeat. At the end of the second rak'ah, sit for Tashahhud (Ettehiyyatu...) — recited silently by all.
- 9
In prayers of 3 or 4 rak'ahs, rise for the remaining rak'ahs after Tashahhud. The additional rak'ahs are performed silently (Al-Fatiha only, no extra surah).
- 10
In the final sitting (qa'da), recite Tashahhud, then Salawat (Allahumme salli...), then the closing du'as — all silently.
- 11
End the prayer by turning your head to the right and saying aloud: "Esselamu aleyküm ve rahmetullah", then to the left: "Esselamu aleyküm ve rahmetullah". The congregation follows with their own salam.
Rules for the Congregation
Never move before the person leading. If you bow before their takbir, that rak'ah is invalid and must be made up.
After the opening takbir, say your own "Allahu Ekber" silently before moving into each position.
When the person leading recites aloud (Al-Fatiha in Fajr, Maghrib, Isha), listen in silence. After Al-Fatiha ends, say "Amin" quietly.
If the person leading makes a mistake (extra rak'ah, forgotten step), men say "Subhanallah" and women clap once to alert them.
If you join late and miss a rak'ah, enter quietly with your own takbir at whatever position the person leading is in. After the final salam, do not give salam — complete the missed rak'ahs alone.
Do not rush — if the person leading rises before you finish your tasbeeh in sujud, follow immediately. Missing some repetitions is acceptable in congregation.
Joining Late (Masbuq)
If you arrive after the prayer has started, perform wudu if needed, make your niyyah, and join with your own takbir at whatever position the person leading is currently in. If they are in ruku and you enter ruku before they rise, that rak'ah counts. After the final salam, remain seated and complete the missed rak'ahs in order — as though you had joined from the start.
Mistakes During the Prayer
The congregation alerts the person leading with "Subhanallah" (men) or a single clap (women). If they correct themselves, everyone follows. If a prayer was led while the wudu of the person leading was broken (and this becomes known), the prayer must be repeated by all. For minor errors, the person leading performs Sujud as-Sahw (two prostrations of forgetfulness) at the end, before the final salam.
